Sim-Gaming for Lang. Learning (Fall 2009)

In LING 4980/5980: Sim-Gaming for Language Learning, students will learn how simulation and simulation-gaming can be used to make language learning not only engaging, but exciting, and directly relevant to real-world situations.

This class will focus both on computer and so-called “paper-and-pencil” simulation-games (the latter using documents, physical props, and so on). In-class activities will include discussion of readings, demonstration of simulation techniques (with students taking part in actual simulations), and simulation-design/use workshops. Teachers: Getting Started with Moodle

This post is for teachers (faculty and graduate TA’s) in the UT English Department who want to get started creating courses on the English Department Moodle.

Step 1. Create an Account.

The first thing you need to do if you want to create a course on the English Department’s Moodle is to create an account there if you don’t have one.  Go to

and simply log in using your UTAD user name and password.  Enter your user name preceded by “utad\”, for example: “utad\jsmith17″.

The first time, this will take you to a page where you need to fill in some information to create a profile for your Moodle account.  Fill in your first name, last name, e-mail address, and other information marked as required.  Leave the password field blank so that the Moodle simply uses your UTAD information.

What can the English Department’s Moodle do for you?

This post is written for faculty and TA’s in the Department of English.

First of all, What is a Moodle?

A Moodle operates as a collection of web pages divided into “courses”. A Moodle course is really just a kind of work area, usually set up so that it is available only to a teacher and a specific group of students. A Moodle course can include a number of different types of resources and activities. These are accessed through web links from the main course page. See Figure 1.
