About this Site

Once upon a time, there was a paper version of the University of Toledo English Department Newsletter. But as the years passed, costs of mailing rose, budgets fell, and no single faculty member could devote the time to keep it going. Publication slowed to once a semester. Then one dark year saw just a single newsletter. Finally, the newsletter lapsed a deep, deep coma. After years with no reawakening in sight, this electronic newsletter is our attempt to revive a lost departmental tradition.

The site is managed with the blogging tool WordPress. This allows an editorial staff to divide the effort so that the General Editor and Column Editors (one of whom is the Department Chair) each have responsibility for separate topic areas. The General Editor administers the website and handles faculty professional development news, among other things; each Column Editor handles a separate topical domain (see the Contact Us page). WordPress has other advantages over a traditional hardcopy (paper) format. An obvious one is budgetary: there are no printing and mailing costs. A less obvious advantage involves what we are able to publish: we are no longer limited to things which can be put on a flat, unmoving page. News can now include any and all computer-readable media which might better communicate what the University of Toledo’s Department of English Language and Literature is and what it, its faculty and staff, its students, and its alumni are doing.

I encourage all English Department faculty and staff, undergraduate and graduate majors, and all UT English alumni to subscribe to our website using an RSS feed — of course, it’s free! For information on how to subscribe, see the page titled “Subscribe“.

Faculty, please send news about your professional activities. Students, tell us about your special academic accomplishments. Alumni, please keep in touch. See the Contact Us page. See the Submit News page to learn how to submit your news.
