Basic ESL Tutorial

The Basic ESL Tutorial focuses on communication – speaking and understanding basic spoken English, beginning reading and writing in English as a second / foreign language – not on grammar or drill. It is led by a graduate student in the University of Toledo Master’s Programs in ESL, using state-of-the-art materials developed by UT students and faculty.

Is this tutorial for someone you know? Here’s how to know:

  • Is he/she an adult?
  • Does he/she have very little ability to communicate in English (or none at all)?
  • Is he/she unable to pay for private tutoring or other classes?

If the answers are “yes” to all three questions, this tutorial may be for him/her. Participants may be spouses or parents of UT faculty, staff, and students, or any non-English-speaking adult in the Toledo area who is not a UT employee or student.

What do participants learn? Those who attend the Tutorial will have the chance to learn how to communicate in real-world situations. They will learn practical skills of speaking, writing, and understanding.

When and where is the tutorial? Every fall and spring, there are two six-week-long evening sessions scheduled at UT.

Where is it? The Basic ESL Tutorial is conducted on the main UT campus on Bancroft Street. Participants may drive (free UT parking will be provided), or take the bus (UT is conveniently located on more than one TARTA route). Participants get details about how to find the classroom when they sign up.

What does it cost? Those who attend pay nothing. The tutorial is free, as a service to the Toledo area community.

How do I find out more (or sign up)? Contact Prof. Douglas W. Coleman, Department of English Language and Literature, University of Toledo. Phone: 419-530-2318 (dept.) or 419-530-2514 (office).
